Jurgens Hanekom was born in the Cape Colony, in what is now the Western Cape of the Republic of South Africa.
Restricted from wandering by his grandparents, where he lived after his mother died – he found comfort in books. Enthralled by the magic of reading, he devoured them, especially the adventure ones. With each venture into the world of imagination, he became more aware of the magnificent world around him. Later, the wildlife, the plains, the bush-veldt; the unfettered freedom to roam the country he loved so much.
However, nothing spectacular happened in his young life. He grew up; after studies, compelled like most of his age, did a stint in the military. Thereafter, he spent the better part of his grown-up life in West Africa. Where, knowledge of the bush and its peoples helped him survive a social madness, which drove societies apart.
With the return of peace to the region, he headed south. He ended up in Cape Town, where acting on advice from a friend, he started a civil engineering venture. Even found time to get married.
Always dabbled in writing, but only when he moved to the United Kingdom did the latent writing bug came to the fore. Using past experience, he started writing adventure fiction thrillers in his unique South African style. Where, striving to make them his own, he immersed himself in the lives and setting of his characters; made them and their surroundings come vividly alive. |
